A Look at the 13th Pick

Barring a trade, the Detroit Lions will select a player with the 13th overall draft pick on Thursday night. The 13th pick has had some successes and disappointments. Let's hope they end up with the former. Here is a look at the 13th pick dating back 20 years.

Overall, I graded the picks as 16 good picks, 3 bad picks, and 1 incomplete. I gave Brandon Graham an incomplete because he only played in 13 games as a rookie before he tore his ACL. I would have given the 2009 and 2008 picks an incomplete had they not been so good.

A few if the "Boom" grades were given to players that made the Pro Bowl, even though their entire career wasn't a total success. The bust picks were mainly relative to their draft position.

Overall, it gives me hope that the Lions will get a good player at 13. Of course, this means they will trade out of this pick.

EDIT-I changed Kamerion Wimbley from Bust to Boom. I didn't really check his production, which is pretty damned good. 35.5 sacks in 5 years. I had him confused with someone else, I guess.

  1. Lee Evans and Donte Stallworth as booms?? At best they sputtered to a boo_. Stallworth killed someone and Lee Evans was the #2 receiver this year over some Johnson guy no one ever heard of before this year. I say both of them, while showing some flashes of brilliance, were average at best and fall closer into the bust category.

  2. Evans I will stick by. He has had virtually no quarterback or second receiver for most of his career, and still put up better than average numbers. He had Bledsoe for one year, and a mixture of J.P. Losman, Trent Edwards, Ryan Fitzpatrick, and others. He had Stevie Johnson last year, but relied on guys like Josh Reed and Eric Moulds to pull coverage. He had T.O. in 2009 and had a great year.

He was also the 3rd receiver taken behind Roy Williams (Evans has better stats) and Reggie Williams (not even close)

Stallworth....meh. I didn't call him a bust because he was a top receiver for 5 years or so. I could go either way with him but he was at least the best WR taken in the first round in 2002 (Ashlie Lelie and Javon Walker.)

I tried not to be too "on the fence" by having a middle ground, so I figured he was a good/not great player.
